Title: Why do I care about DNA?

Lesson Overview:

Start by going over the previous nights homework questions and discussing them as a class (10 mins). Then we will have a PowerPoint lecture with a graphic organizer for them to fill in the steps of the replication process (30 mins). Finally I will hand out the lab procedure for the next day and discuss it before the students leave. I will have them read it over for homework.

Objectives:

Students will be able to draw a double helix
Students will know what bases pair together
Students will be able to describe what bonds hold the nitrogen bases together
Students will know the difference between introns and exons
Students will have an understanding of DNA replication

Materials:

Instruction:

Opening:

I will start the class by going over the previous nights homework and making sure it is done and we will correct it together as a class and I will write the answers on the board. I will put the class agenda for the day on the board (10 mins).

Learning Activities:

I will lecture to the students via a PowerPoint presentation and they should be writing key points in their logbooks, once we start discussing transcription, they will have a graphic organizer to follow along with and fill in the appropriate information (30 mins).

Closing:

I will reiterate what we discussed that day, the key points (drawing double helixes, base pairing, bonds, introns and exons, and replication). Then I will hand out the lab and introduce it to the students and have them read it over for homework. Students will have a pre-lab quiz before the lab begins tomorrow. I will also remind students to look for their current event that is due on Friday that they will present.

Assessment:

graphic organizer, making sure everyone is filling theirs out while we are discussing PowerPoint slides.

Homework:

Read Lab handout. Pre-lab quiz tomorrow.
